My Zoho Documents

I am creating a document in Zoho Writer to try this application as part of our Library 2.0 blog. I think this should work quite well for me because you can save your documents online and access them from wherever you are. Another great advantage is that you don't need to install any software.

Bluetooth Technology

This is a new post about technology. I somehow missed creating a post about technology which was one of the requirements. Anyway, I am doing it now.

I like Blue Tooth technology because it is wireless and connects mobile phones, laptop computers, MP3 players, stereo sets etc etc. It is also low cost and easy to set up. You can carry your PAN - Personal Area Network with you wherever you go and you can even connect to others. The 'Bluetooth' refers to a Danish King 'Harald Bluetooth'who unified Denmark and Norway.

I have bought myself a GPS. When I was travelling in the States there was a GPS in the car we rented and it took us everywhere without problem whether it was within a city or out in the country. You could program it to talk to you in Spanish or with an Irish accent, or you could have a man or a woman talking.

You can see a picture of a Bluetooth GPS in the left side.

Last post: the end or the beginning of the journey...

As a said before, it has been an interesting experience. I have enjoyed some of the sites, others I haven't found so useful but we will certainly need to become familiar with these sites if we are to help our customers. These are the type of searches that we will be doing, that we are already doing: Have you got any good podcasts on knitting? etc. etc.

Week 9: Podcasts, Video & ebooks

Exploring UTube and podcasts have been interesting. It is good to become familiar with these sites as we will need to find podcasts or videos for our customers. This is the new type of search and it is already happening: "I am interested in in a podcast on knitting.."

This is my video: Second Life

I have also had a look at NetLibrary and have opened an account. There are some interesting books. There is one called "Home with your ancestors.com: How to Research Family History Using the Internet" for those interested in family trees. In fiction there are all the classics. You can also search in Spanish.

Week 8: Online Applications & Tools

There are so many sites to visit in the Web 2.0 awards list - even in the shortlist - that it is difficult to choose. There are many which we already know and have subscribed to, like flick'r, del.icio.us, technorati etc.

I have had a look at Biblio.com and I think this one would be good in a library because you can search for used and out-of-print books by author, by title, by keyword or ISBN and even by binding! There is Book Discussion, Book collecting, Textbooks, Rare books etc.

I also looked at Google Maps where I can trace and find streets and directions in little villages in Spain.

Week 7: Wikis

I have had a look at the wikis in the Discovery Exercise. I like them for different reasons. The SJCPL Subject Guides is good because it has loads of links to useful places in the home page itself. Besides books and desk information, you can find local public libraries, community organizations and resources, everything about health, travel, pets, gardening etc. etc. It's all there at the reach of a click. The Book Lovers Wiki is very good too, with all your favourite genres grouped there in the home page, e.g. biographies, chick lit, classics, horror and even staff reviews. This, and the fact that everybody can contribute and add content make a wiki a very good e-resource for libraries.

I have added my blog to the Favourite Blogs Page.

Week 6: Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati

I have been exploring del.icio.us and tagging things that interest me. There are so many sites... but you can find nice photos and designs in del.icio.us and flick'r. Folksonomies is collaborative categorisation.

Web 2.0/Library 2.0 is about sharing information and keeping in contact. Many people I know, not only in the library, have joined either flick'r or del.icio.us, Facebook or any of the others. It is a good way to explore the Web. Also, if you find anything that interests you you can tag it. Tagging is something that libraries can take advantage of. I haven't added the Technorati code because I am not sure I like the idea but it's a pity because I like using html. I might do for something else if I have the time.

Week 5: Play Week

I have been playing with the 'online image generator' and have tried several different kinds. I have personalized a bar of chocolate and put the picture in Facebook (ha ha). There are generators for all sort of things, from writing wine reviews to creating shapes and superimpose your face on someone famous like Che Guevara. Fun to play with if you have the time. Look left and see my name monsterized.

I have joined "Library Thing" - look at left side column - and tagged and catalogued some of my favourite books.

I have also joined "Rollyo" adding the things I would like to do.

Week 4: RSS & Newsreaders

I have now subscribed to some RSS feeds. This will keep me up to date with the things I am interested in. Sites like Boingboing, Technorati etc are good for reading the latest in technology. I have also subscribed to The Guardian and The Guardian Technology page.

Week 3: Photos and Images

15th October is 'Blog Action Day', so here I am blogging.

I have had a quick look at 'flickr' which is an interesting site. I haven't got any photos however but I'll explore the mashups when I have a little time.

I have been reading a blog about 'Second Life' where it is said that an avatar consumes only a bit less energy than a real person.

Week 2: Social Networking

Most people now are creating a blog. I have had a look at 'My Space' and other sites and have subscribed to FaceBook. I have done nothing with it yet because one needs time to browse these sites and time is one thing nobody has these days. When and if I have time I'll look for some photos, get a pal, etc. It is good that we are all practising our skills and using these sites to socialize.

Week 1. Creating a Blog

Today is my first day working in the Ground Floor seconding Sue Slade. She is working in the basement project. I am now working with the magazines.

I already know most people here since I have worked in the Ground Floor before but today there is a new staff member.

I have done a blog before as I am studying for the MLIS so I have only really adapted it for this project.
